Rifampicin-Isoniazid 300/150 mg Coated Tablets


What are rifampicin-isoniazid tablets and what are their uses?

  • Rifampicin and isoniazid belong to a class of drugs called antituberculosis drugs. They work by killing the bacteria that cause tuberculosis. Rifampicin and isoniazid are used to treat tuberculosis.

Do not take rifampicin-isoniazid tablets if:

  • You are allergic to rifampicin, isoniazid, or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.
  • You have yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice).
  • You were taking saquinavir or ritonavir for HIV infection

Warnings and precautions:

  • Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before taking rifampicin isoniazid tablets if:
  • You have liver problems
  • Do you have any kidney problems? And if you are taking more than 600 mg of rifampicin per day?
  • You have diabetes
  • You have epilepsy
  • If you suffer or have suffered in the past from mental health problems (such as depression or schizophrenia)
  • You feel numbness or weakness in your arms and legs (peripheral neuropathy).
  • You have HIV infection
  • You were underweight or malnourished
  • Do you drink alcohol every day or are you addicted to alcohol?
  • You inject yourself with drugs
  • I was a Black or Hispanic woman
  • You have a rare blood disorder called porphyria, or a bleeding problem, or a tendency to bruise easily.
  • She wears contact lenses.
  • The person taking this medicine is a child or is 65 years of age or older.

Possible side effects of rifampicin-isoniazid tablets:

  • You may notice a change in color (yellow, brown, orange, or red) in your teeth, urine, sweat, phlegm, saliva, or tears.
  • This is very common and nothing to worry about. However, the color may permanently stain soft contact lenses. The tear color may persist for some time after you stop taking rifampicin-isoniazid tablets.

Other medications and rifampicin-isoniazid tablets:

  • In particular, do not take this medication, and tell your doctor, if you are taking:
  • Saquinavir or ritonavir are used to treat HIV infection.
  • The following medications can make rifampicin-isoniazid tablets less effective:
  • Antacids are used for indigestion. Take rifampicin-isoniazid tablets at least one hour before taking antacids.
  • Other medications used for tuberculosis
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following medications:
  • Heart and blood medications
  • Medications for mental health, epilepsy, and motor neuropathy
  • Anti-inflammatory and immune system medications
  • Hormone and cancer drugs
  • Pain and inflammation medications
  • Medications used for diabetes
  • Medications used to relax muscles before surgery (anesthesia), such as halothane
  • Some medications used to treat feeling unwell or sick include ondansetron and aprepitant.
  • Other antibiotic drugs such as cefazolin
  • Quinine - used for malaria
  • Theophylline - used for wheezing or difficulty breathing

How to take rifampicin-isoniazid tablets:

  • Take this medicine orally.
  • Swallow the tablets whole with water.
  • Take it at least 30 minutes before a meal or two hours after a meal. Ideally, take it at least 30 minutes before breakfast.
  • Take all your tablets together every day, as one dose.
  • Do not give this medicine to children.
  • If you feel the medication is too weak or too strong, do not change the dose yourself, but ask your doctor.
  • Your doctor may ask you to take vitamin B6 while you are being treated with rifampicin-isoniazid tablets, especially if you are malnourished, elderly, or have diabetes.
  • Adults and the elderly weighing over 50 kg
  • Two tablets every day
  • If you are elderly, your doctor may closely monitor your treatment.
  • Adults and the elderly weighing less than 50 kg
  • Rifampicin-isoniazid 150 mg tablets are usually prescribed
  • children
  • This medicine is not recommended for use in children.

How to store rifampicin-isoniazid tablets:

  • Keep this medicine in a safe place where children cannot see or reach it.
  • Do not use rifampicin-isoniazid tablets after the expiry date printed on the carton and blister packs.
  • The expiry date refers to the last day of the same month.
  • Store below 25°C. Keep the bubble wrap in the outer carton and protect it from moisture.

* The dosage form and method of administration of Rifampicin-Isoniazid 150/100 mg coated tablets should be prescribed according to the therapeutic indication and severity of the disease for each individual patient.
